Bed Mattresses: Comfort, Size, Longevity

Posted on December 25, 2009 at 3:57 AM

Few things are more personal or have a more lasting impact than buying your own bed. It is a large undertaking with many considerations. If you find yourself in the market for a new bed, don't just rush to the store and buy the first one you see!

You must actively think about your comfort and remember that you will spend about eight hours each day with your Bed Mattresses. That is a long time to be uncomfortable. Don't buy whatever type of mattress you've had all your life. You may not know that your body actually prefers a different level of firmness. Go the opposite way, just to try it.

Make sure to do this before you even enter the store. Ask a friend if you can take a nap at their house, or take note when you go to hotels what the beds are like and how well you sleep. Merely lying on the mattress at the store while a salesperson lurks over you is not going to give you an accurate opinion.

Keep in mind that mattresses are expensive because they should last a long time. Don't buy one merely because it's the cheapest you can find; you will be replacing it much sooner than you had to. You should expect to spend at least $500 on a good mattress. Anything less is suspect.

Note the size of the bed, too. If you share a bed, how much space do you each require? Ask the salesperson to use a tape measure on the display mattresses to show you the difference between what is before you and the other mattress sizes. You may be surprised by how little or how much of a difference there actually is.

A few-inch upgrade could cost hundreds more, but those few inches may be all that is separating a couple from total comfort. Some hate the wide space of a king-sized bed, others need its room to sprawl. The important thing is to understand your own body and its needs.
